Welcome to The Annual Empty Bowl Event 2020 – A Virtual Success!
For the past eighteen years, The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Galveston County, Texas has sponsored The Empty Bowl Event in an effort to raise funds sponsoring the Nutrition Programs of The Jesse Tree. This entails:
Purchasing all the raw materials to handcraft ceramic bowls; gathering a group of talented individuals (lovingly known as The Bowlers!) and meeting weekly to mold, shape and hand-make bowls for the event,
Handcrafting over four hundred, unique ceramic bowls, painstakingly hand decorating and glazing each one; firing them and finishing them,
Wrapping storing and preparing for the Annual Empty Bowl Event.
Madeleine Baker, a member of UU Galveston and a former member of The Jesse Tree board of directors introduced the event to the Galveston Community.
The Jesse Tree is a convening organization, founded in Galveston, Texas by a group of concerned individuals who wanted to harness the creativity of the internet to better serve those seeking assistance in our community. The Jesse Tree acquired its 501c3, non-profit status in a letter of determination from the IRS in 1995.
Since its inception, The Jesse Tree has created a network of information, resources and services to link, bridge and fill gaps that help those seeking healthcare, social services, ministerial assistance and community resources. For example, each month a box of food is delivered to the seniors and disabled individuals living in Holland House, Gulf Breeze and The Oaks – some of the poorest members of the community – to assure that they have improved nutrition and access to the resources and services they need. All of the proceeds generated by The Empty Bowl Event support this effort.
The Empty Bowl Event 2020 Event Honoring Freddie Black who was serving as President of The Jesse Tree Board of Directors at his untimely death in August of 2020. Recently, COVID19 Claimed the life of Neil Huddleston, one of the Bowl Makers who worked for nearly twenty years to make this event happen. Both Freddie and Neil will be sadly missed by all.
